Wheel Alignment Training with STR8-LIGN


It’s important to mention that although Str8-Lign has been designed to simplify and speedup the wheel alignment process, it is critical that you first have some basic understanding of wheel alignment and suspension concepts and we don’t recommend you set-off and make adjustments to wheel alignment without the proper qualifications or training to do so.

Correct wheel alignment is an important part of vehicle maintenance and safety we therefore always revert to the car makers specifications before making any adjustments, these specifications are available from the manufacturers themselves or from independent databases, such as Autodata.

Upon receipt of your STR8-LIGN system, you should set up your field calibration template within your workspace to ensure ongoing accuracy and alignment success.

It is essential to check each vehicle's specifications before commencing with any wheel alignment adjustments. STR8-LIGN requires that you know and understand the difference in front and rear track width before diagnosing any wheel alignment issues. STR8-LIGN System Setup


The STR8-LIGN wheel Alignment system is supplied to you as a complete kit, which will allow you to measure and correct, front and rear toe, camber, caster, thrust angle and steering clear vision.

The System Comprises

4 x Maze Plates, manufactured from high quality Japanese steel specifically used for its restrictive quality similar to that of gauge plate.

4 x Targets, you should mostly be operating within 1 to 15 minutes of the centre however the targets cater for readings up to 120 minutes toe in or out, allowing you to report on vehicles with extreme alignment problems.

12 x Magnetic adapters, available in two different lengths for different wheel rim designs.

1 x Laser Measuring tool, this is handy to check if a vehicle has setback or caster problems.

1 x Camber/Caster Gauge.

1 x Steering wheel clamp.

Optional - 2 x Turn Plates, easily maintained with replaceable steel bearings and built-in stoppers for one person operation. (SOUTH AFRICA ONLY)

Front & Rear Toe Angles


The most critical element in achieving accurate readings is to first ascertain the front and rear track width of the vehicle you are working on. This information is available from the manufacturer, Autodata or other online databases.

Once you have this information it’s as simple as sliding the laser plate on the rear wheel target to create your perfect square, remember that if your rear axle is 20mm wider than the front then you will slide the lasers 10mm inwards per side, and if the rear is narrower then you will slide the units outwards.

Wheel Alignment Diagnostics Only

If you are using STR8-LIGN as a quick checking tool at a PDI Centre or workshop, or using the system to streamline the queue at a busy wheel alignment centre then this is the only information you will require.

Wheel Alignment Diagnostics and Adjustment

If you are planning to make adjustments to wheel alignment then in addition to our STR8-LIGN unit, you will need access to the suspension parts to make necessary changes more manageable, and the manufacturer's specifications for each particular vehicle.

Toe Angle

Once the targets are attached you can set the rear units to create a perfect square, turn the lasers on and check the front and rear wheel toe angles, remembering that the rear wheel toe angle is shown on the front wheel target and the front wheels toe angle is indicated on the rear target.

The toe targets will additionally indicate if both rear wheels are “following” the front wheels and that the alignment angles are equal on the left and right sides of vehicle, allowing the technician to report and repair thrust angle problems.

Caster and Setback


Caster is a critical wheel alignment setting that affects both straight line stability and pulling to one side if caster angles are not correct. Most modern passenger cars have factory set non-adjustable caster settings but should still be checked using the gauge supplied and reported on if incorrect.

When you attach the STR8-LIGN targets they naturally self-centred, providing the user has adjusted the target magnets correctly for the size of the PCD, and the number of wheel nuts. If you look at the centre of the star knob located on the maze plate, it should be almost perfectly in line with the centre of your mag or rim.

Correct placement of the target heads will allow the user to measure the distance between the front and back wheels on the left side and compare it to the distance between the front and rear wheels on the right-hand side of the vehicle.

The gauge supplied with your STR8-LIGN unit has a subtraction function that will immediately show you if the wheelbase on the left and right are even or not; additionally, you can compare these lengths to the manufacturers’ specifications, to quickly ascertain caster or setback problems.

It is not uncommon that vehicles are marginally shorter on the driver’s side to compensate for road camber or crown. However, significant differences would indicate either caster or setback issues.

With STR8-LIGN these can be identified in minutes.

Turn Plates (Turn Tables)

The correct turn plates have been designed to assist with single user operation when taking caster readings, with built in removable stoppers that lock at 20 degrees out and 20 degrees in. That allow the technician to stop the wheels at exactly the correct caster reading position without having a second person watching the turn plates.

Camber


The targets horizontal surfaces are manufactured to be 90 degrees to the maze plates, this always you to easily measure the camber of each of the wheels using the camber gauge supplied in your STR8-LIGN unit.

Remember that the vehicle needs to be on a level surface and the tyres correctly inflated in order to achieve the most accurate readings.
